On April 16, 2021, the Portland-Khabarovsk Sister City Association commemorated the 74th anniversary of the meeting of American and Soviet Union troops at the Elbe river on April 25, 1945. The event was held at the War Memorial in Beaverton, Oregon.
As PKSCA Board Member Natalie Verdi tells the story,
The commander of one of the units of the 1st American Army was ordered to cross the Elbe River and find Soviet units. The allies knew that they were close but had not yet met. And very soon the Americans on the other side of the river saw the cavalrymen of the 58th assault guards division. The word comrade sounded. As journalists wrote “East meets West”. And in April 1945 in Germany, the American and Russian armies met a few weeks before the end of the Great Patriotic War. For the first time in recent years, both Washington and Moscow simultaneously celebrated the 74th anniversary of that meeting, which was called Restoration of Day of the Elbe.
